Episode 33: Quinton Higgins on surviving the Kings's Island bus crash of 1988

May 24, 2020

I am speaking to a man named Quinton Higgins. He is a survivor of the 1988 Carrolton, Ky bus crash that killed 27 people.

On May 14, 1988, a youth group consisting of students who attended North Hardin High School, James T. Alton Middle School, Radcliff Middle School and four adults from the Assembly of God church in Radcliff, Kentucky, boarded their church activity bus and headed to Kings Island theme park in Mason, Ohio.

The group included church members and their invited guests.

After spending a fun filled day at the Mason, Ohio amusement park, the group left after the park closed. At 10:55 p.m., while heading south on Interstate 71 just outside Carrollton, Kentucky, the bus collided with a black 1987 Toyota pickup truck traveling the wrong way (north in the southbound lanes) at a high speed. The small truck was driven by Larry Wayne Mahoney, a 34-year-old intoxicated factory worker.

Of the 67 people on the bus (counting the driver), there were 27 fatalities. Listen to Quentin tell his story of near survival and how he has managed to turn a horrific tragedy into a positive experience.
