How to Move Up the Corporate Ladder, No Matter Where You Start
Director of the Year finalist Margie Brine describes her unusual career path: from shuttle bus driver to director of public safety at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. For security staff, police officers or other campus employees just starting their careers, it can be downright overwhelming to think about how they are going to move up the job ladder. They may look at the security director, police chief or administrator they report to, wondering how in the world they can achieve that kind of success.
But those individuals should take heart. It is possible to move up, even if they are starting in the most junior of positions.
Just ask Margie Brine, who is the director of public safety for Barnes-Jewish Hospital as well as one of this year’s Campus Safety Healthcare Director of the Year Finalists. She began her tenure with Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 1982 driving a shuttle bus for the campus. The single mom of three children slowly worked her way up to security officer, training officer and other leadership positions, eventually to the position of director.
At the same time, Brine obtained her bachelors and then masters degrees with the financial support of her employer, all while finding someone who would treat her son’s endocrine disease.
