brave space: a gathering of makers
episode four: theo lowrey
I met with Theo Lowrey at the end of February to talk about his work as a composer. Listeners of brave space will recognize his moniker, Noon, as the creator of the music featured on the pod. (Listen on to learn the origin of that name!) Theo talks about growing up surrounded by music and instruments. A former actor, he now prefers creating his own personal work and working behind the scenes versus acting as someone else in a play. For Theo, a "successful" song is one he can talk about in therapy, since it is so personal and has deep meaning.
We chat about the challenges of breaking into a community, especially when you feel like you're living a transient life and aren't geographically rooted. It takes a lot of work to set up shows and to market oneself. Theo does consider himself to be an artist, but says it's difficult to focus on one thing and to do it as a living right now since there are so many other parts of his life that need time and attention.
We also talk about deadlines and the challenges of finishing projects when life gets in the way. Theo shares that a friend recently noted that she was impressed that he had finished many projects, but Theo counters that saying he also has many, many unfinished or discarded projects. Noon's debut album is complete, and Theo's enjoying being "hands off" while the final pieces fall into place.
Thanks so much to Theo for chatting with me about his music! I am honored to have his music on the pod, and can't wait for his album to drop. To learn more about Noon, visit noonantroll.bandcamp.com or Facebook at "noon - band".
