Accessible business for an aging population part 2 – Show notes
Mark Hager: Welcome to Booming! Your Bottom Line, a weekly podcast where we talk about how to start & grow, or expand your existing small business by serving the specific needs of the aging Baby Boomer Consumer (http://ageinplace.com/owners/podcast/episode-003-exploring-baby-boomer-consumers-opportunity/). They’re numbers are growing by 10K a day & we’ve been studying and helping understand this market segment together for over 20 years. I’m Mark Hager, and with me is my co-host, Aaron Murphy (Exchange hello’s with Aaron.)

Aaron Murphy: Last week - We started this 3 part series on Accessible Business (http://ageinplace.com/owners/podcast/accessible-business-aging-population-1/) for an Aging Population where we talked about the business opportunity that accessibility presents owners like you.

A: It’s a mindset shift, but over the next 3 decades it will be a MUST for your organization if you’re going to reach the BOOMER CONSUMER.
Massively lucrative way to GET AHEAD of competition
Set yourself apart, be MORE CARING and MORE GIVING
Gonna be MORE PROFITABLE!

A: Check out Podcast #16 from last week at our website - and any other subject we’ve covered thus far - there’s been a TON of great information that is a FREE resource to you on there! And a reminder, you can subscribe on iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/booming!-your-bottom-line/id958313063?mt=2) or Stitcher (http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/booming-your-bottom-line/) as well.

M : So this week, we are getting into part 2 of what it means to have an accessible business. This is more than just wider doorways and parking spots, folks. Aaron and I are super excited to get down to the nuts and bolts of this issue with you today.

M : This episode we’re talking about physical accessibility of your store, shop, office or whatever you have where customers come to see you. It’s going to be an eye opener for all of our small business owners - that’s for sure!

A: Before we get into this, I want to reiterate that everything we’re going to talk about here is GOOD FOR NEARLY ANY CUSTOMER. These aren’t things you’d have to change just for older customers. When I speak on stages I talk about how “Universal Design†and “Accessible Design†are NOT just about aging. I’ve torn my achilles tendon playing basketball before, and I can tell you “stairs suck†at 28 just like they do at 88 when you are hurt. And that cheap & crappy “spec house faucet†design with the pull out single knob is just as tough for my daughter to use as it is for your grandmother! :)

A: So I want to give a quick overview of “Accessible†as a term. I won’t get too geeky in my Architectural speak, but I just want to help folks understand a bit about where this whole “ADA†and “Accessible Equality†thing came from. I have lots of numbers, distances, widths, turning WC circles etc. in my head but I won’t bother you with that here. All you need to know as a backdrop is:
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990[1][2](ADA) is a law that was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1990. The ADA is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.
