FMCA Day 2: Battle Born Batteries and Cummins Inc.

May 11, 2023

Today’s show is all about power as we continue to share our live podcast interviews while attending the 106th FMCA Convention in Perry, Georgia. First up is Battle Born Batteries, followed by Cummins.

Dragonfly Energy

Dragonfly Energy

First is Eric Carter, Technical Sales Support for Dragonfly Energy/Battle Born Batteries. Eric explains the difference between Battle Born Batteries and its parent company Dragonfly Energy and who can buy which batteries for their installs. We also talk about what it means to be a U.S.-based company employing over a hundred and seventy Americans.

“If we were a company with batteries built overseas and a container load shipped to us. Then we just take them out of the container and drop in a cardboard box and ship them out. We can do that with a dozen or a couple dozen people. We don’t need 170 employees to do that. Dragonfly Energy wants to be that traditional American manufacturer. We want to be hands-on with our productand, know exactly what’s going into every battery. That’s how we understand the products so well. That’s how we know the mobile power systems like we do, and we can provide the level of service we do.” – Eric Carter, Technical Sales Support.

Dragonfly Energy is also looking to expand its product line by purchasing the Wake Speed Offshore, known for its alternator regulators. Dragonfly Energy is also developing a way for users to monitor their battery performance worldwide for each installed battery. This new technology is called IntelLigence. Eric goes into detail about how it all works.

Cummins Inc.

Cummins

After a short break, Chris Crowel, the RV/EV Market Leader at Cummins Inc., joined us. Chris has been with Cummins for over 35 years and has a wealth of knowledge to share about the company. In this interview, you will hear what led Cummins to enter the RV market with their diesel-powered engines. We chat about Cummins’ long history of being in business for over 100 years, the company’s future, and its role in the RV industry.

Cummins has several diesel engines in their lineup, and you may wonder how they decide when it is time to update a machine or do a complete redesign. The answer is in this interview. Chris also shares the R&D process and how consumer testing helps them work out kinks before a new engine hits the production line.

“Field test vehicles are customer units. We want to put them in real-world service doing what they do. We do find a lot of things that customers will say well, that’s nice, but it sure would be nice if it did that, or I need this parameter, or I need it to behave differently. Then we can take all that feedback in and work on our tuning. We get a ton of great feedback from those customers.” – Chris Crowel RV/EV Market Leader Cummins Inc.

More than Diesel Engines

Cummins makes more than just diesel engines. They are currently working on machines that run on natural gas, propane, and gasoline and are even in the EV (Electric Vehicle) market. These are exciting times, and we look forward to seeing how these new technologies are integrated into the RV industry.

Cummins also builds several different-size generators for the RV market. You are probably familiar with their fixed-mount generators that come with an RV when you purchase it, but did you know they also have a full lineup of portable generators? Chris talks about these generators and how some can be daisy-chained together, giving you the power to exceed your needs.

Chris also has a great answer on how the company feels about consumers using aftermarket products to make engine performance changes.
