Beyond 50
EPISODE 592 - The Nanty Letters
For Beyond 50's "History" talks to celebrate the 4th of July, we'll have Renee Daphne Kimball on the program. She'll talk about her valuable purchase of "The Nanty Letters" that was about the lives of three connected familys from the early to late 1800s. Kimball offers a much more accurate depiction of colonial times in America. Women, even wives of major figures in history were considered only "bit players" with little to contribute to our knowledge of the time and events. Today, we are told even the wealthy and more connected women were merely concerned with needlework, parlor gossip and dinner parties. However a cache of letters and cleverly drawn "cartoons" of everyday life in the homes of the movers and shakers of history tell quite a different story. What was written in "The Nanty Letters" offers a "back story" of the historical dramas of famous Americans like Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln, Abigail Adams and others.
