366. Migraine headaches linked to diet and eating habits

January 23, 2023

Migraines affect more than one billion people across the world each year. For a large percentage of them, the migraines can be debilitating. A new study published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience shows that your diet and eating habits can trigger migraines or make them worse. Researchers analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Of the close to 9,000 subjects studied, over 1,800 suffered from migraines. The researchers found that those with mild, moderate or severe malnutrition experienced more intense headaches. They also had lower levels of vitamins and nutrients in their diets, such as fiber, folate, riboflavin, selenium, potassium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C and vitamin K. On the other hand, migraines sufferers tended to drink more coffee and consume more theobromine, which is found in chocolate.
