Overview
What is it like to escape from rock bottom? Garrett retells his story of how he went from nearly failing out of school (and losing a track scholarship) to graduating at the top of his Law Class and getting a dream job.
Sometimes we are not performing at our best. Are we able to get back on top? Is it even feasible? These are difficult questions to answer when you've been knocked down from your peak.
Don't be satisfied. Be passionate and competitive in whatever you do.
When Garrett started living for someone else instead of himself, he started to climb up from rock bottom. Embarrassment is a strong motivator.
When you work for someone else, you find huge amounts of energy to keep pressing forward. This energy does not stem from a pressured environment. This energy stems from self driven efforts in a selfless manner.
Before going to bed, reflect on your goals. Every day.
[1:30] Garrett went from rock bottom to becoming an All American track star, rising to the top of his law class, and participating in the Board of Regents.
[2:20] Garrett’s story starts with not being prepared for real life and not being a go getter.
[3:40] His Freshman year was filled with a track injury. This injury and the removal of track caused Garrett to enter into depression.
[4:20] Find people’s inflection point. What was Garrett’s inflection point?
[5:20] Garrett had a 1.5 GPA and got called into his coach’s office as a consequence. He was chewed out by his dad and his coach…which did not fire him up. He barely missed failing out.
[6:30] Rock bottom involved nearly failing out and as well as running slower. He contemplated quitting after seeing his 400m time get worse.

"Everyone has down falls and people tend to think that when you are not at your best and will not never back to his best, it is hard to keep pushing on. Entrepreneurs face this self doubt all the time."
[9:20] Thoughts such as “I need to quit” go through our minds everyday. Garrett had a breakdown and started emotionally exploding.

[10:20] Garrett lost part of his scholarship and had to try to convince his coach that was not the real him in order to prevent his coach from taking away the entire scholarship.
[11:45] If you put in work and time now, you won’t see the results and the fruit of your labor for two years. The best time to start was yesterday. You can’t start yesterday, so you start today.
[13:00] Garrett could have taken an easier road. He had to shift his focus from track to school and all around life.

"Don’t be satisfied. Be competitive and passionate about whatever you do."
[14:15] Passion breeds success and success breeds passion. If you are not passionate about what you are doing, you don’t be successful. You must either be passionate about something or switch to something that you are passionate about.
[16:30] Garrett is on the board of Regents and represents the students at the university of Houston.
[17:45] Garrett developed a relationship with a tennis player. He saw her work ethic. He was taking his situation for granted. He was embarrassed. Embarrassment is a strong motivator.
[18:45] Working and living for someone else is a game changer for turning a life around. This was without pressure and a self driven effort.
[20:00] Mentors are a great source of personal relationships to push oneself in order to grow. Mentors will put stress on you. They will change your thinking. Mentors push you without the pressure. It is a combination of wanting to improve yourself and not let them down.
