e004: How Much Truth is There to Dunbar’s Number? Can You Really Only Have 150 Friends?

September 09, 2015

Have you thought about the quality of the relationships that you have in this social media era?

You have hundreds (or even thousands) of friends on social media. Does that prove Dunbar and his 150 friend theory is wrong? No, Dunbar’s research is more accurate than ever. The relationship quality outweighs the quantity of “relationships” that exist online (which are closer to digital images than relationships).

Your top five friends are probably pretty close to you. How would you like to form tighter bonds with more people in your network? You can improve relationships by clearly defining your values and shouting them to the rest of the world. These values will ripple through your network from your top five friends to your network’s tier 1, 2, and 3. I discuss this tiered system in more detail and the importance of guarding your relationships as if war was declared.
