I know this is a long one. It is worth it. Break it up if you need to. It will be here for you to come back to and listen until you finish. Keep taking or start taking action that speaks to you.
And remember, you can have uncomfortable and/or hard conversations.
Loki Mulholland joins me today to give us some guidance around our conversations around racism. I am beyond grateful and honored to share space with him and have this conversation.
Loki Mulholland is an Emmy-winning filmmaker, author, activist and son of civil rights icon, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland. His work has received over 40 Telly Awards and his films on race and social justice issues have won 16 Best Documentary awards. His first book, “She Stood For Freedom” was nominated for the 2017 Amelia Bloomer Award. Loki is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and speaks all over the country on issues of race and social justice. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Joan Trumpauer Mulholland Foundation which was created to end racism through education.
I had so many takeaways and I hope you do as well. I want to make sure now that I know more, that I helpfully do more.
I probably mess up or make mistakes a million times in this conversation. The point is, I’m having it. I’m willing to learn and apply what I learn.
Please join the conversation and let me know something you learned from this conversation and that you want to apply to actively engage against racism.
Some great takeaways, but you’ll find more:
If you want to diversify your circle, include your social media, movies you watch, books you read, the music you listen to, the art you hang on your walls, where do you go on vacation, ect. Diversity is more than just color, it also includes religion, viewpoints, favorite foods. You get the picture. Have people in your life that are not the exact same as you.
I used the word “different” a few times. Loki suggested that taking out the word “different” would be helpful because that can indicate what is “normal.”
Silence can be seen as affirmation or agreement to what is being said.
When you encounter a “Karen” make sure to befriend the person being target by the Karen. Be the barrier.
It can be helpful to ask people questions and meet them where they are at.
Talk about love vs. hate (Ruby Bridges)
Teach your kids not to be racist.
There is always hope.
White people are the first step in ending racism.
Focus on changing the world you are a part of vs. the world. “Don’t try to change the world, just change yours.” “Bloom where you are planted.”
The something you can do, matters. Don’t do nothing.
Understand American history and be willing to ask questions.
Vote. It actually matters. Vote in the elections and with your dollars.
Do what’s right even when it’s hard.
