Backroads and Banjos with Art Rosenbaum on AM1690
January 1863
Art celebrates the arrival of 2013 with songs commemorating two very important events from January 1863. First, of course, is the emancipation proclamation. Each year, many African-American churches celebrate the arrival of a new year with a Watch Night where they not only use songs to praise God, but also to remember their emancipation from January 1, 1863. Also commemorated on this episode is the Battle of Stones River. While Lincoln was announcing the freedom of the slaves, Union and Confederate forces were fighting the Battle of Stones River which would take the highest percentage of fighting soldiers of any battle in the Civil War. This is remembered in song by Kentucky mountain singer Doc Parks.
