Community Connections Flying While Disabled
Airtravel is hard; but, when you have a disability, it becomes almost like mission impossible. Â On Monday, June 23, 2014 at 8:28 am, we arrived at the Southwest Airlines terminal at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Â My partner has MS and uses a cane. Â Walking any distance is exhausing for her and standing in one place for an extended amount of time is impossible. Â So we always make sure that we clearly indicate PASSENGER NEEDS ASSISTANCE when we book her flights. Â What happened next was not only a comedy of errors but it made my blood boil enough to come home and develop a show on the topic.Â
The Airline Carrier Access Act (ACAA) prohibits commercial airlines from discriminating against passengers with disabilities and also mandates that certain accommodations are provided.Â
Tune in as I share not only our experience but also experiences that some of our listeners have shared with me from my Tweet about Southwest Airlines. Â The summer travel season is upon us; and, if you are flying with a disability--fly informed!Â
