The True Meaning of Christmas Gifts: Giving from the Heart ~ Episode 363

Year after year, we spend a great deal of money on the perfect gift, only to miss the true meaning of Christmas gifts: giving from the heart. How can we take back the holiday and our sanity? In this episode of A Few Minutes with God Podcast, Felice focuses on the true meaning of Christmas, making it affordable and Christian!

I heard someone enthusiastically say that the holidays are near, and I panicked. My son is deployed, and I want to send him a package. I have baking to do (which I love), and I have presents to buy. I don’t have enough time or even the energy to tackle all of this in November, let alone December! But then I took a deep breath and prayed, ‘God, help me,’ and I felt calm.

Biblical Perspective on Giving

What is the biblical perspective of giving? All of it costs nothing. It is time, love, courage, and inspiration all stemming from our love of God. If we love God, this love will pour out from us onto others. The biblical perspective on giving emphasizes generosity that flows from a grateful heart, not obligation or show. As Catholics understand it, giving isn’t about a strict percentage like Old Testament tithing but about offering cheerfully and sacrificially, returning God’s gifts back to Him through acts of worship and charity.

Charity in Gift Giving

This topic highlights generosity inspired by the Magi in Matthew 2:11, who journeyed far to present gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the infant Jesus—not out of duty, but as an outpouring of adoration and recognition of His kingship, divinity, and future sacrifice. Similarly, in 2 Corinthians 9:7, St. Paul reminds us, “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Acts 20:35 echoes Jesus’ words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” showing how giving aligns us with Christ’s selflessness. In everyday life, this means prioritizing heartfelt gestures over extravagant spending, allowing God’s grace to transform our giving into a reflection of His abundant love.

Translating Biblical Giving into Christmas Gifts

But how does this translate into gifts? Sometimes the best gifts are those that cost the least. Baking has been my go-to for many years. Since there is a sweet overload these days I have switched to bread baking for gifts. Even if you are not a baker there is something you can give from the heart. As a young mom, I longed for a time to get away to shop for groceries or even get a haircut without the children near. I was delighted when my mother-in-law and in later years my parents could watch the children for me. Those gifts of time are priceless to young people and old alike.

Consider simple, meaningful ways to embody this:

Share a handwritten note of encouragement with your favorite prayer or write one. Offer to help a neighbor with chores during the busy season. These acts mirror the Magi’s offerings and invites the Holy Spirit to work through us, fostering a deeper connection. When we give we do so not because of obligation but because we are thankful for what the Lord has done for us. Sharing your praise reports is another way to share God’s love.

Of course, giving gifts is another way to consider gift-giving a symbol of Christ’s gift to us. We can never outgive God!

Faith-Based Gifts That Honor God’s Love

What are faith-based gifts that honor God’s love? Here are five ideas, each paired with a Scripture verse to inspire your giving:

A Personalized Prayer Journal:

Gift a simple notebook where the recipient can record prayers, reflections, and answered petitions. This encourages daily communion with God and honors His love by prioritizing spiritual growth. As Philippians 4:6 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” You can find these at discount stores all of the time. I found beautiful leather-bound journals for $4.99 one year.

An Act of Service, Like Babysitting or Meal Preparation:

Offer your time to assist a busy family or elderly friend, freeing them to rest or worship. This selfless giving reflects Christ’s servant heart and builds community in His name. Galatians 5:13 instructs, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

A Charitable Donation in Their Name:

Contribute to a faith-based cause, such as a Catholic charity supporting the poor or pro-life initiatives, and present a card explaining the impact. This gift extends God’s mercy outward, embodying stewardship of His blessings. Proverbs 19:17 states, “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.”

Masses Celebrated:

Enroll a loved one in perpetual spiritual benefits through Mass offerings. Purchase Mass enrollment cards from websites such as Marian.org, where you can arrange for them to be remembered in daily Masses, providing a gift that lasts for years through ongoing prayer and intercession. A card will be sent in your name. Direct link here. This underscores the eternal value of prayer for souls. As Hebrews 7:25 affirms, “Therefore he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.”

Handmade Rosary or Prayer Aid:

Make or buy a rosary to encourage devotion to Our Lord by the example of our Lady. The rosary centers on the mysteries of Christ’s life. His birth, his death, and His resurrection. This simple tool fosters a habit of meditation and draws the recipient closer to divine grace. Luke 1:42 inspires us: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (One year I purchased glow in the dark rosaries for my grandchildren. I still had mine from my grandmother (yellowed and frayed) and it was something I treasured from my childhood.

These ideas keep Christ at the center, transforming gift-giving into an extension of worship and evangelization.

By choosing gifts like these, we not only express love but also plant seeds of faith that can grow in the hearts of those we cherish. Imagine the joy of knowing your gift leads someone to a deeper encounter with the Lord—truly a reflection of the first Christmas gift, the Savior Himself.

In preparing these heartfelt presents, start with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide your choices and infuse them with genuine charity. Involve your family in the process, turning gift-making into a shared act of faith that strengthens bonds and teaches the next generation about generous living. Remember, the Lord delights in our efforts, no matter how small, when offered with a pure heart.

Reclaiming Christmas Through Heartfelt Giving

As we approach this sacred season, let’s remember that the true joy of Christmas lies not in material abundance but in emulating the generosity of our Savior’s birth. By focusing on gifts from the heart—infused with time, love, and faith—we honor the Incarnation and invite others to experience God’s peace. Pray for guidance, as I did, and watch how the Lord multiplies your efforts. May your Christmas be filled with the light of Christ!

In the hustle of holiday preparations, it’s easy to lose sight of the manger’s simplicity, where God’s greatest gift arrived humbly.

Consider how acts of kindness, like baking treats for a neighbor or crafting personalized prayers for loved ones, echo the selflessness of the Holy Family. As Proverbs 11:25 reminds us, “The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself.” Let this verse inspire you to give without expectation, trusting that the Lord will refresh your spirit amid the festivities.

Reclaiming Christmas means weaving faith into every tradition, from adorning your home with nativity scenes to sharing stories of saints who embodied charity. In doing so, we not only deepen our own devotion but also light a path for others toward eternal hope. Reflect on 2 Corinthians 9:7: “God loves a cheerful giver.” Embrace this call with joy, knowing that heartfelt giving transforms ordinary moments into sacred encounters with divine grace.
