Ep107 | What Even is Pelvic Health Physical Therapy with Doc Krystal
In this episode, Doc Jake sits down with Dr. Krystal Fannin, a pelvic health specialist and yoga expert known as the 'Swiss Army' for her practice. Doc Fannin shares her passion for helping women in the pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause/menopause stage, as well as men experiencing groin pain or back pain. While she didn't initially plan to specialize in pelvic health, Krystal found it to be an amazing and rewarding experience. She explains the process of pelvic health physical therapy, starting with discussing pelvic floor muscles and then assessing them externally or internally based on the patient's comfort level.
The conversation further explores the extensive skill set that a physical therapist needs to possess to truly impact their patients' lives. This includes knowledge of sleeping habits, stress management, nutrition, and other aspects of healthcare like chiropractic care, acupuncture, sex therapy, mental therapy, nutritionists, functional nurse practitioners, and OBGYNs. The significance of nutrition in pelvic health is highlighted, including how factors like hydration and stool consistency can prevent fecal incontinence. Krystal explains how a PT can provide feedback and perform internal exams similar to OBGYN appointments to help patients connect with their pelvic floor, diagnose issues, and guide correct practice in standing positions.
