Pentagon Funding at UW Tops $220 Million

In the 1960s and 1970s, military spending and research on the University of Wisconsin campus drew the ire and attention of anti-war activists. In 1967, students protesting napalm manufacturer Dow Chemical recruiters on campus clashed with local police.  The anti-Pentagon sentiment culminated in the 1970 New Year’s Gang bombing of Sterling Hall, which housed the Army Math Research Center.  With the abolition of the draft in 1973 and the United States’ withdrawal from Vietnam in 1975, anti-war protests have largely died down.  College university spending from the military, however, has not.  A recent report from Wisconsin Watch revealed that the University of Wisconsin pulls down tens of millions of dollars in federal grants for military research.  Wisconsin Watch reporter Noe Goldhaber joins us now in the studio.
