The Militarization Of The El Paso Border

July 03, 2025

Tony’s guest on the Thursday Buzz, Alan Lizarraga, a spokesman for the El Paso-based Border Network for Human Rights, discusses the establishment of National Defense Areas around El Paso.

According to Lizarraga, the boundaries of the National Defense Areas have yet to be defined publicly, meaning U.S. citizens and migrants can’t know whether they’re trespassing in the new military zones. The 63 mile buffer zone between El Paso and Hancock, Texas, resulted from a memo issued by President Donald Trump that sought to enlist the military to curb migrants entering the United States. This came despite the fact that the number of border crossings has been dropping since last year.

The military has said it will detain both unauthorized immigrants and U.S. citizens in these zones for trespassing.

The Border Network for Human Rights’ general purpose is to facilitate the education, the organizing and the participation of marginalized border communities to defend and promote human and civil rights.
