Red, White and Weird: Apostle Islands Signs Raise Eyebrows

July 03, 2025

Tony Castañeda, host of the Thursday 8 O’Clock Buzz, talks with Jeff Rennicke about recently posted signs in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore park which urge visitors to report “any signs or other information that are negative about either past or living Americans or that fail to emphasize the beauty, grandeur, and abundance of landscapes and other natural features.”

Rennnicke, Executive Director of the Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, believes that the Executive Order (Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History) under which the signage was posted implies that the truth has not been accurately told, and asks visitors to report any information at the park considered anti-American.

The signs (posted by the US Department of the Interior) have raised concerns about censorship and could potentially undermine the authority and educational mission of park rangers. Rennicke believes that the stories told in our parks should be guided solely by historical accuracy, including those that don’t alway cast us in the best light.

Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore seeks “to promote an appreciation for and preservation of the natural environment and cultural heritage of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore”.
