Jennifer Loewenstein, Middle East expert and former lecturer, provides her monthly update on events in the region on the Thursday edition of the 8 O’Clock Buzz.  As the destruction and atrocities continue in Gaza, the overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria became the shock heard round the world.  Rebel groups brought about the collapse of the Syrian autocracy in a matter of days after Assad’s key allies were unable to provide the necessary military support needed to keep the strongman in power.  Israel immediately took advantage of the situation by destroying key naval and air bases in the country in order to limit the ability of a future national government to defend itself from outside threats.  Time will tell if the new government will be able to unite the country and provide a lasting peace that its people deserve.
