Performance Anxiety
Richard Black (Shark Island)
I know I’ve mentioned that when I starting thinking about doing this podcast, I had a top ten list of guests I wanted to have. Some were obvious and others less so. This one is one of the top three. Richard Black is the singer for the band Shark Island. They played in the LA area beginning in the late 70’s through to the early 90’s. They released one major label album and a handful of songs on soundtracks. But that was it. Richard fronted the short lived hard rock supergroup Contraband and then left music completely. But after finding a new passion in metal sculpture, Shark Island has returned with 2 studio albums and one live release.
Richard is very candid with me and we spent a long time discussing his careers; setting bars low to avoid disappointment; watching grunge change the musical landscape, particularly in LA;demoing songs with Skid Row as his backing band, and recording in 432 instead 440.
