UVP 144 The Vet Who Won’t Go Home

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic they were discussing with a colleague recently. This colleague is in a position where they are managing an awesome veterinarian - they are providing solid, high quality care, the clients and team adore them and everything is pretty great. Except that this veterinarian seems to be at the clinic CONSTANTLY. They are working 3-4 hours after their shift has ended each day. They are not only making themselves available to their team, they are also actively communicating about cases and patients on their days off. They cannot seem to unplug from their patients/clients and leave work at work. Our colleague was expressing their serious concern for Dr. Works-A-Lot. They are worried about their mental and physical health and wellbeing. They are worried about and care for this vet. They do not want to see them burn out! They spoke to Dr. Works-A-Lot and it got very emotional. Dr. Works-A-Lot was very upset initially because they felt like they were doing the right thing for their patients and clients by making sure charts were detailed and complete, call backs were all made, they answered all the questions that needed to be answered etc. Dr. Works-A-Lot was seeing things through the lens of feeling criticism vs empathetic feedback about how work was impacting them and also how their decisions were impacting the team.
