Two Human Rights Museums that will enlighten travelers about civil and human rights through the years are waiting for you to visit. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, Canada, is built on the sacred, ancestral ground of the First Nation people. The importance of what the land meant and still means to the indigenous people continues to be recognized and acknowledged. 

I visited the museum where the story of not only Canada but a timeline of the human story is displayed with informational and interactive exhibits. While there, I asked Rorie McLeod, Media Relations Specialist with the museum, to tell us about the museum and the stories you will find in the exhibits when visiting. He also shares Canada’s human rights story. It may not be as it always seems, yet the acknowledgment and actions for reconciliation are prevalent in how their story is told. 

The Children’s Museum Indianapolis is filled with learning opportunities for youth. Understanding how we interact and appreciate the human experience can start with helping children learn, respect, and value each person’s life. Travel can help children learn this early in life. Each exhibit offers a chance for a child’s curiosity to wander through the various floors of exhibits. The museum is a spectacular way for children to learn and have experiences across the arts, sciences, and humanities that have the power to transform their lives and their families.

I had a chance to visit the Emmett Till exhibit on limited display at the museum. I talked with Aaron Bonds, Director of Actor Interpretation & Theatre at the Children’s Museum. I asked him about the temporary Emmett Till exhibit and how it all came together. 

Today there is more and more focus on human and civil rights. Museums feature the stories of humanity; many are not pleasant to talk about and explore. However, we show empathy and understanding by facing our past, acknowledging our wrongdoings, and making a way to unite, recover and move toward healing.
