What Is the Davo Show?
  • A short-form audio podcast

  • A place to experiment with ideas, sound and quick podcast production.

Mostly, I create sounds from nature or music.

[0:17] Hey, folks, it’s David Bourne.

And that sound you’re hearing, you may recognize is the Atlantic Ocean.

I am at Oak Island, North Carolina. I’m facing the water and the facing due south.

Because when you look out over the beach at Oak Island, you don’t look east like you might think. You look due south.

So if you went straight, if you could, as the crow flies fly like a crow all the way south you would cross over the Bahamas, you would go over central Cuba somewhere called Florida

Not Florida that’s in the United States but there is a town called Florida in central Cuba somewhere between Las Tunas and Sanctu Spiritus.

[1:40] I know that because I’ve been to Cuba and I looked on the map and that is what’s due south of me, which is kind of crazy because, I don’t know, when you’re on the Atlantic Ocean, you look over the ocean, you kind of think you’re looking at Europe, or, I don’t know, Africa.

But I am looking at the Bahamas and Cuba.

So I wouldn’t know that if I didn’t have my map on my phone.

I’m also looking at a boat with some very, very bright lights that’s about, oh, I don’t know, 150 yards offshore.

It’s probably about a hundred foot long boat.

I think it is a dredge boat, I don’t know.

[2:33] It’s pretty unusual for me to see a big old boat like that. Is it a ship?

I don’t know, what’s the line between a ship and a boat?

It’s pretty close to a ship.

[2:45] So I’m here at the beach and I am excited to be here. My lesson for today, what I’ve learned today, is it is just really nice to get away.

[2:57] You know, in your mind you think it’s going to be nice, but when you actually get there you’re just like, oh my gosh, this is so nice to get away, especially when it’s a nice place.

And we’re close to the beach. We’ve got that constant sound of the waves churning. It’s not too crowded here. It’s not noisy at all. You know, it’s just pretty close to perfect, so I’m just grateful.

And I’m remembering you know it is worth the how many hours did we drive I don’t, know it took about six hours from door to door because we stopped a lot we brought the dogs and they take a lot of stops and so it was a long day and I’m tired but that’s…

my lesson for today that you know it’s good to go get away but when you actually get there it feels worth it.

So I’m soaking it in. I’m enjoying the sights and the sounds.

Got some folks down on my left. I see some, flashlights on the beach. Probably some kids with a family looking for shells.

[4:19] I’ve got on my right that boat, ship, whatever that is, and I’m just glad to be here.

So I hope wherever you are, you’re glad to be where you are.

If you’re not, then take a deep breath, look around. My guess is there’s something there that’s pretty cool if you just appreciate it.

All right, until next time, I’m David Bourne. You can find me at davidbourne.com.

See you out there. Cheers.
