The Night Light with Joshua Johnson

Artificial Intelligence, and Civic Ignorance
In this episode, I’m thinking about citizenship. September 17th is Constitution Day, marking its signing in 1787. This document is a constant source of debate – especially some of the amendments – but a lot of us really don’t know the Constitution very well. An Instagram video about this ignorance made me want to laugh and cuss at the same time. I’ll have more on the sorry state of civics, just ahead.
But first: this week in Washington, US senators discussed the future of artificial intelligence with tech industry leaders. We’re already using AI in lots of ways: some cool, some creepy, some cringey. But if you think AI is on track to replace our humanity, I think that’s unlikely… at least, not for a while. And there’s one very human quality that no one is apparently thinking about teaching computers to emulate… or at least, we’re not hearing much about it.
