Rite of Passage, Puberty, and Turning Red

April 28, 2022

I recently watched Pixar’s latest bit of brilliance, Turning Red—a film about Meillin, a Chinese-Canadian girl who, due to a magical family blessing turned curse, discovers on her 13th birthday that she has the power to morph into a huge, red panda when she’s super-charged with emotions. But, my dear Trauma Hiders Club member, Turning Red is so much more than that.

In this episode of the Trauma Hiders Club, I discuss Turning Red and how it touches upon intergenerational trauma, the mother-daughter bond, relationships formed outside of the family, parental pressures, and puberty. I share a childhood experience I was reminded of after watching Turning Red. I also discuss rites of passage and giving your inner child some love.

“Turning red has so much for today’s kids. If you want to give your inner child some safe, kind, generous, and meaningful love, grab a pad, hug a panda, create a ritual, and give it a chance.” - Karen Goldfinger Baker

This week on the Trauma Hiders Club Podcast:
