Hyper-independence and Learning to Trust

March 17, 2022

“If you want something done, do it yourself,” goes a quote attributed to many people—from Bonaparte to Zorg from the movie, The Fifth Element. Many people who subscribe to this belief think it is necessary to become successful in life; but when your default nature is to push through and do the thing—all the things—rather than receive support from others, that’s hyper-independence. And hyper-independence is a trauma response.

In this episode of the Trauma Hiders Club, I explain what hyper-independence is and why it’s a trauma response. I discuss how we bring our self-reliance to extremes as a result of trust issues. I discuss what it takes to trust. I also underscore your worthiness to receive love and support simply because you exist.
