Forgiveness is an Inside Job (and a Detonator Button)

February 17, 2022

Forgiveness is like a detonator button in the Trauma Hiders Club. While forgiveness is definitely a hot-button topic for me and for so many of my clients, I’ve been thinking about how we’re conditioned to forgive and forget, or to believe in the old adage that to err is human and to forgive is divine. But to me, forgiveness is an inside job—one that involves reuniting the parts of ourselves that splintered away in response to trauma.

In this episode, I discuss the healing power of reconnecting, forgiving, and loving all the parts of ourselves. I share my definition of forgiveness and describe a Jungian view of trauma. I also discuss how trauma can lead us to cut away parts of ourselves and highlight the role of reconnection in the process of forgiving.

“The inside job of connecting our disowned parts promotes healing, where the self is empowered and the offender loses hold and melts away like the Wicked Witch.” - Karen Goldfinger Baker
