Popular Disco Songs Remixed & Reimagined — Thank God It’s Disco Volume 8
We have reached the end of the Thank God It's Disco series and volume 8 packs a lot into this 4-hour set. While there is a bounty of familiar freshness here — there are equally some golden treasures here.
"She Can't Love" by Chemise is an underground gem that was originally released in 1982. If the riff sounds familiar, it's because it has been sampled a multitude of times. Here, Purple Disco Machine dusts off the original masters and re-works it in his own disco-funk signature style, while retaining all the elements of the original that make it special.
Another lesser-known track is "New York Moving" by Ahzz, which had an official remix by I-Robots but that version was an edit of the instrumental version with some minor male vocals. Even then, the vocals lasted maybe 30 seconds in total. If you weren't familiar with the song (which most aren't) you wouldn't what you were listening to. DJ Disco Cat recently dropped some edits that included the vocal version of the song but I couldn't recognize where he did anything with it other than improving the sound quality. So, I took that version and punched it up a bit, and then flipped it using the mix out in the middle as the intro that leads into the song. Oddly, it's the way the instrumental version builds and I'm uncertain as to why there was such a difference in the structure for the vocal and non-vocal versions. Maybe the instrumental was a demo before the vocals were added. I can't say for certain.
Then there is "D.I.S.C.O." by the French band Ottawan. The song was written by Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kluger. Though the song was originally recorded in French in 1979, an English version was released in 1980 where it found greater success and went to #2 in the U.K. Since then, the song has been sampled a multitude of times and even covered by N-Trance and The Young Professionals. Interestingly, Daniel Vangarde's wife was Sheila of Sheila B. Devotion who worked extensively with Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards. Her biggest hit "Spacer" was featured on volume 7 of this series. Vangarde also wrote the Disco hit "Cuba" by the Gibson Brothers (also featured on volume 7). Even more interesting is Vangarde is the father of Thomas Bangalter who is one-half of the French house duo Daft Punk.
The release of volume 8 for the TGID series coincides with the death of Irene Cara who rose to fame in the early 1980s with the theme songs to "Fame" the movie in which she starred, "Out Here On My Own" also from the same soundtrack and the massive "Flashdance...What A Feeling" produced by Giorgio Moroder for the film by the same title. Ms. Cara died of unknown causes in her home at age 63. Party Favorz would like to dedicate this final volume to this phenomonal singer and actress. May she rest in peace. Irene Cara Escalera (March 18, 1959 – November 25, 2022)
Party Favorz has a brand-spanking-new entry into the Diva Hall of Fame scheduled to drop next week. This artists induction is long overdue but with a bevy of her back catalog recently remixed by Dirty Disco and the release of a new #1 album and song — I decided it was time to pay her proper respect.
Until the next time...ENJOY!
