Kathy Sullivan Explores
The Time We Swapped Names
During your first year as an astronaut, you’re an astronaut candidate or ASCAN. This is your year of preparation--basically, it’s grad school for astronauts. During this time, you have a briefing with the previous class of astronauts, or, in my case, Neil Armstrong and Mike Collins.
Today, I talk about the incredible experience of meeting these two men. I talk about hearing about Apollo 11 from them and what they told us. I discuss why it was perhaps the most impactful day of my life, and I share details of the whole day.
“This was the day we were going to learn about Apollo 11, the actual first landing on the moon.” - Kathy Sullivan
“Calling heroes of my childhood colleague and friend - that’s when you know that you’ve arrived at a very, very special place.” - Kathy Sullivan
This week on Kathy Sullivan Explores:
- Life as an astronaut candidate
- Meeting Neil Armstrong and Mike Collins
- Learning about Apollo 11 from the astronauts on it
