Here's the Deal: Fitness, Nutrition, & Mindset for People Who Don't Want Life to Suck
Pulling Yourself Out of a Spiral with Dr. Josh Smith
Today we have the honor of speaking with Dr. Josh Smith, a psychologist who specializes in chronic illness, pain, relationships, boundaries, and communication. Josh joins us today to talk about the personal and emotional that goes into being fit and healthy, because we believe that mental health, self-care, and managing your energy is a huge and essential part of being fit and healthy. We believe that health is a whole-body experience – mind, body, spirit – self-care included. Self-care is the thing too many people always shortchange, because it takes the most personal work, and they see it as a luxury they can’t afford to spend the time on. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Today, we talk about the built-in imbalance of work and life in today’s world, the responsibilities and demands that functioning and responsible adults have, unnecessary expectations, guilt, shame, and perfectionism. We talk about honesty – with ourselves, our employers, our partners, our families.
We dive deep into wants versus needs, and helpful guilt (yes, that actually does exist) versus the detrimental guilt we can spiral around. We talk about boundaries, and the phrase “make a different mistake” and how that’s such a helpful perspective instead of “just don’t mess up.” We chat about getting used to disappointing people! And how that can actually be a very good thing!
And so, so much more…
“If you want any change in life, it’s making sure you’re not focused on any one specific area and that you’re looking at the whole of it to figure out what are your hurdles and barriers and strength.”
- Dr. Josh Smith
“We get so caught up in this ‘I don’t want to mess it up. I don’t want to do it wrong. I don’t want anything that’s a check mark in the failure column.’ Well, if anybody is going to progress anywhere, you can’t fear the check mark in the failure column. There is no path forward without failure.”
