The Rising Leader

Lazy Leadership

October 04, 2023

You’ve probably seen a video making rounds on the internet recently: a gentleman speaking to an economic forum sharing his rather controversial take on unemployment. The gentleman claims that today’s workers are arrogant and feel like they can get away with anything and their companies owe them; that we need to “put employees in their places” by doubling unemployment and having hard economic times. Autocratic leadership—thinking that you have to beat people into submission to squeeze productivity out of them—is not just antiquated, but lazy as well. Unfortunately, as wild and outdated as it sounds, it’s prevalent thinking.

In this episode, I discuss how leading with an iron fist is lazy leadership and reveal the common denominator between accomplished, effective leaders like Beth Perlman, Deloitte CIO Larry Quinlan, and NetApp President Tom Mendoza. I discuss the power of empathy and care as core leadership traits. I also highlight tailoring your leadership approach according to personality type and underscore building trust through genuine care for others.

“Amazing leaders who have accomplished so much have a common denominator: they run towards fire.” - Mark J. Silverman
