Our Thoughts on His and Hers

If you missed the podcast episode, don’t worry! Below is a detailed rundown of everything we discussed. And if you want to join the conversation, we’d love for you to become a listener of Girls Gone Hallmark.

What We Liked

There were many aspects of “His and Hers” that we thoroughly enjoyed:

Unique Plot

We appreciated that the lead characters, Dana and Mark, were a married couple. This is a rare storyline in the Hallmark universe, where the focus is usually on new romantic relationships. It was refreshing to see a happily married couple navigating both personal and professional challenges while working on a high-profile divorce case.

Heartfelt Dialogue

The script by Susan Black and Joie Botkin was commendable for its sensitive handling of Mark and Dana’s journey of starting a family. We loved how they blended the couple’s desire and worries about their future seamlessly into the storyline.

Strong Chemistry

Lacey Chabert and Brennan Elliott, portraying Dana and Mark, brought a natural, comforting banter to their roles, avoiding the brother-sister vibe and establishing a genuine romantic connection. Their established work relationship from previous projects shone through, adding depth to their on-screen married life.

Great Lines and Humor

The movie had some very funny and memorable lines, such as Dana’s “Nordstrom Rack” comment and the humorous exchange between Mark and Brett at the gym (“Do you even lift, bro?”). These moments added a light-hearted touch that we really enjoyed.

Clever Direction

Director Linda Lisa Hader did an excellent job with visually appealing shots and architectural details. The interiors of the settings were beautifully moody, setting a perfect New York City vibe that added to the film’s charm.

Unexpected Storylines

The twist of the celebrity couple (Tabby and Brett) manufacturing relevance through their divorce spiced up the narrative. It mirrored modern PR relationships and added a layer of intrigue we didn’t see coming.

What We Wished For

Even though we loved the movie, there were a few things we wished were different:

Clearer Explanations

The process of serving papers in the movie left us with questions. Is it standard practice to take a photo as proof of serving divorce papers? We found this detail confusing and would have appreciated a clearer explanation.

Smoother Resolutions

The subplot of hiding money between Tabby and Brett felt unnecessary in the grand scheme of the storyline. Dana also appeared too soft with Tabby, leading us to wish she were more assertive with her challenging client.

Better Time Management

The text on the background checks appeared too quickly for us to read, requiring rewinding. Slowing down these moments would have helped viewers absorb all the information without missing crucial details.

Less Pressure

Mark’s persistence about starting a family came off as a bit too pushy, especially when Dana was clearly undecided. Letting this storyline breathe more could have made their discussions feel more organic.

Did You See That?

Here are some fun Easter eggs and interesting details we spotted:

  1. Will Kemp Reference: Dana’s previous marriage to a character named Will Kemp was a clever nod to the actor with the same name.
  2. Crossword Easter Egg: Dana working on a crossword and filling in the word “Logan” is a delightful nod to Brennan Elliott’s character in the Hallmark movie “Crossword Mysteries.”
  3. Classic Movie Homages: The movie paid homage to classic films like “Adam’s Rib,” and there were plenty of Godfather references, enhancing the cultural richness of the dialogue.
  4. Technical Glitches: We noted a funny mix-up where the Hallmark Channel mistakenly aired a Christmas in July promo before the movie, and a glitch in the courtroom scene that played back two seconds of footage.
  5. Architectural Shots: Kudos again to Linda-Lisa Hayter for capturing the beautiful architectural details and moody settings, which we found visually appealing.

Our Rating

We thoroughly enjoyed “His and Hers” and gave it high marks:

  • Megan’s Rating: 4 stars
  • Wendy’s Rating: 4.25 stars
