Our Thoughts on Head Over Heels

If you’re new here, this space serves as a companion to our Hallmark Review podcast, where we dive deep into Hallmark’s latest releases. Today, we’re bringing you a comprehensive review of “Head Over Heels,” which premiered on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday, August 31, 2024. As always, we invite you to join us on Instagram and our Facebook group, Girls Gone Hallmark, to share your thoughts and engage with fellow Hallmark fans.

What We Liked

While “Head Over Heels” had many ups and downs, there were some standout elements that caught our attention:

  1. Alexandra Castillo as Delaney Diaz: For many of us, Alexandra Castillo was the star of the show. Playing the demanding boss, Delaney Diaz, she brought a level of sophistication and talent that elevated the film. Her portrayal of a Miranda Priestly-esque character from “The Devil Wears Prada” was both cliche and refreshing.
  2. Rebecca Dalton & Oliver Renaud’s Performances: Despite working with a script that left much to be desired, both Rebecca Dalton (Addie) and Oliver Renaud (Austin) managed to create some memorable moments. Their chemistry was subtle but noticeable, delivering a few endearing scenes together.

What We Wished For

Despite the bright spots, there were several areas where we believed the film could have been significantly improved:

  1. A Bigger Budget for Fashion: Making a movie about high fashion with a limited budget is a tough task. The lack of resources was evident in the costumes and set design, making the fashion-centric plot hard to buy into. This inadequacy was reminiscent of Hallmark’s previous effort “Killer Clutch.”
  2. Clearer Job Roles and Motivations: Austin’s job and his working relationship with Delaney Diaz made little sense. He seemed more like an employee than an outsider PR guru, which created confusion around his role in the film.
  3. Family Dynamics: Addie’s family, particularly her dad and meddling sister, were portrayed in a negative light. Their disregard for her new job responsibilities and the sister’s reckless behavior with Addie’s portfolio added unnecessary drama.
  4. Addie’s Entitlement: Addie’s tantrum over missing family events due to work seemed out of place for someone aspiring to break into the high-pressure fashion industry. This sense of entitlement was out of sync with her professional ambitions.

Did You See That?

  1. Footwear Faux Pas: If Addie is a master shoe designer, why did she show up to her first day of work at a high-end fashion brand wearing knockoff Rothys? It was a missed opportunity to highlight her design talent and passion for fashion.
  2. Confusing Conversations: The runway scene where Addie and Austin have a full-blown conversation while Delaney walks the stage was awkward and out of place. This broke the realism of the climax and left us scratching our heads.
  3. Hideous Shoes: The shoes Addie designed for Austin were far from impressive. For a movie centered around a fashion designer, the footwear could have been more appealing.

Our Rating

After much discussion and consideration, we had to settle on a rating that reflects both the efforts and the shortcomings of “Head Over Heels”:

  • Megan: 2 stars. A half-pity star for the efforts put in by the cast and crew.
  • Wendy: 1 star. This film missed the mark for me in more ways than one.
