• “My Dreams of You” was filmed in Canada’s Ottawa and surrounding areas.

Our Thoughts on “My Dreams of You”
What We Liked

Firstly, big kudos to Hallmark for embracing diversity with “My Dreams of You”. One of the film’s strengths is its casting. We were thrilled to see an Indian American actor, Kapil Talwalkar, in the leading role. It felt fresh and exciting, breaking from the typical mold of Hallmark leads. Plus, let’s not forget Cecilia Lee, who shone as Allura and, for us, stole the spotlight in every scene she was in.

Speaking of characters, we appreciated Skylar Samuels as Grace. It seems Hallmark might be grooming her for the spotlight. From her earlier roles in shows like “Drake and Josh” to her Hallmark mystery stints, she’s proving to be a rising star.

As for the plot, Dream Central was a fascinating concept. We loved the big swings Hallmark took with this idea, even if it got a bit confusing at times (we’ll get to that later!). And how adorable was that rain-soaked kiss? It brought a genuine sense of romance and progress to Grace and Michael’s budding relationship without fast-forwarding to unrealistic love declarations.

What We Wished For

Now, onto our wishes. The movie didn’t come without its flaws. We found that it suffered from a lack of clear direction in the storytelling. The dual dreams and real-life struggles theme felt a bit overstuffed. Dream Central could have easily carried the plot without needing both leads to chase professional dreams simultaneously.

While quirky, the usage of VHS tapes in Dream Central felt anachronistic. It left us wondering about the dream world’s mechanics pre-VHS era. We wish they’d gone for a more timeless or technologically flexible method.

Another point that grated was the abrupt dismissal of Grace’s temp jobs. Temp work is nothing to look down upon, especially when it’s a means to an end, and making her feel less than for not having a ‘real job’ felt unnecessary.

Finally, the movie’s ending left us hanging. We didn’t need a fast-forward, but a bit more closure, maybe a montage of Grace and Michael together, would have been perfect. The sudden cut to credits was slightly jarring.

Did You See That?

In our “Did You See That?” segment, we noticed a few fun and thought-provoking moments:

1. 
   
2. When Grace approaches Michael expecting recognition (because she dreamed about him), and he’s utterly confused. It reminded us dreams don’t have that reciprocal effect, which had us chuckling.
   
3. The hilarious scene where Harvey threatens the train attendant with his control over nightmares, throwing out fears like clowns and childhood traumas.
   
4. Our love for the song “Dream Weaver” by Gary Wright playing at the movie’s end. It’s such a classic from 1975 and added a nice touch, albeit making us feel a tad old!
   

Our Rating

So, where does that leave us in terms of rating? We both settled on a three-star rating. While we admired the ambition and elements of the movie, its execution left gaps that dulled the impact.
