1 Timothy 4:12
Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith in purity.
Some would say that there is an art to adding, so called, colorful language in our daily conversations. They would also say that a little profanity helps to punctuate a point. Some use it to grab attention or to show their displeasure. Others use it seemingly unconsciously. Whether intentional or unintentional it poisons our conversations with the color of mud.
The uttering's of the tongue, are manifestations of the heart. Language is a beautiful, powerful tool when used with simplicity and sincerity, void of profane or indecent speech. Bishop David Burton spoke to this when saying, "Profanity and crudeness do not exalt; they defile." There is something profoundly uplifting when we purge our vocabulary, reaching a bit higher in the use of language. Bruce R. McConkie reiterated the definition of profanity by saying, "Profanity is any language that shows contempt for holy things."
Children can be little parrots, often they will repeat the funniest things we say. They also repeat the most unflattering things we utter.  The ability to look your son or daughter in the eye and say, "I never want to hear anything come out of your mouth, that you did not hear come from mine" is a goal we could all strive for. Teaching them not use foul language, for any reason, is a challenge when the world's bar is so low.
If we are to "be... an example of the believers, in word," then we must totally purge from our vocabulary offensive language and most importantly the taking of the name of our God in vain.
Nay, Speak No Ill

Nay, speak no ill; a kindly word

Can never leave a sting behind;

And, oh, to breathe each tale we've heard

Is far beneath a noble mind.

Full oft a better seed is sown

By choosing thus the kinder plan,

For, if but little good is known,

Still let us speak the best we can.
