Mosiah 2:6
And they pitched their tents round about the temple, every man having his tent with the door thereof towards the temple, that thereby they might remain in their tents and hear the words which King Benjamin should speak unto them.
This is the season of General Conference. Twice a year we gather as "the body of Christ" to hear, learn, and receive instruction, as the Lord would give, through the chosen leaders of His Church. It is a time when we can figuratively "pitch... [our] tent with the door thereof towards the temple."
It is interesting to me that in The Book of Mormon King Benjamin went to such great lengths so that all his people could hear his message. This was a big gathering, so large that the tower King Benjamin had constructed still did not permit all gathered to hear his voice. So, he did what we do today, he had his message written down and sent out to those that did not fall "under the sound of his voice." He did this so that all would "receive his words."
Our gathering this week is not too different from the gathering of King Benjamin's time, save with the help of increased technology, our tower is a bit bigger. A larger building has been constructed so more might fall "under the sound of" the prophets voice. Massive infrastructure takes the message via satellite transmission to meeting houses in nearly every corner of the earth. The internet broadcast can be viewed at home or while in a moving vehicle. And of course, the messages are printed and sent out so all can benefit from Conference.
Concerning General Conference Elder Jeffrey R. Holland has said, "If we teach by the Spirit and you listen by the Spirit, some one of us will touch on your circumstance, sending a personal prophetic epistle just to you."
I believe what Elder Holland said to be true. I have experienced it. This weekend I look forward to pitching my "tent" so that my little family and I can partake of the messages that the Lord would have us hear. We do this with our hearts open and are ears ready to hear.
Come, Listen to a Prophet's Voice
Come, listen to a prophet's voice and hear the word of God,
And in the way of truth rejoice, and sing for joy aloud.
We've found the way the prophets went who lived in days of yore.
Another prophet now is sent This knowledge to restore.
Then heed the words of truth and light that flow from fountains pure.
Yea, keep His law with all they might Till thine election's sure,
Till thou shalt hear the holy vice Assure eternal reign,
While joy and cheer attend thy choice, as one who shall obtain.
1 Corinthians 12:27
