New Wealth Tax Could Be California’s Nuttiest Idea Yet

Under Assembly Bill 259, by Assemblyman Alex Lee (D-San Jose) the state would “impose an annual tax at a rate of 1.5 percent of a resident of this state’s worldwide net worth” in excess of $1 billion starting in 2024.
Starting in 2026, the threshold would drop to just $50 million of worth, taxed at 1 percent.
Note it’s a “worldwide” tax. So property in other states or countries would be taxed. That would be a headache right there. How does one assess value in another country, with different systems of valuation, even different languages? Maybe you could do it in Singapore, which has an advanced economy where many people speak English. But how about investing in cobalt mines in the Congo, subject to price fluctuations, local upheavals, and the interference of Communist Chinese mining interests?
AB 259’s language says the tax would be imposed for an asset sale “at any time within the past 10 years … the taxpayer shall report the valuation” to the Franchise Tax Board (FTB). This apparently means the taxpayer would be liable for such transactions even if he left the state, until the 10 years of “valuation” eventually expired.
The tax would be on top of the current 13.3 percent top state income tax rate, the highest in the country.
And what if taxpayers flee to other countries and sell all their U.S. assets? How will California be able to tax them? If they don’t pay, will the FTB send the California National Guard to collect?
In my 36 years of writing on California taxes and budgets, this is the nuttiest idea yet.

In January the Bureau of Economic Analysis claimed that GDP was up by 2.9% in the 4th Quarter but this makes no sense.

Then looking closer at the numbers it was noted that Americans’ disposable income decreased the most in 2022 since 1932 and the Great Depression.

But there is more. One commodity that economists rarely think of is cardboard. According to Markets Insider cardboard box shipments are at the worst they’ve been since 2009:

An under-the-radar economic indicator is flashing a warning signal to the broader economy as consumer spending slows down. The indicator in question? Cardboard boxes.

According to data from the Fibre Box Association, US cardboard box shipments declined 8.4% in the fourth-quarter, representing the largest quarterly decline since the second quarter of 2009, amid the Great Financial Crisis.

Cardboard boxes are an overlooked barometer of the health of the economy as they are a massive component of consumer spending. Whether its ecommerce or shipping bulk goods to stores, cardboard boxes play a role.

The Mainstream Media that continues to lie to Americans every day is at it again. The economy is not nearly as strong as the pundits would like you to believe. But then again this is the gang that told you Obama’s economy was strong, Hillary was good, Trump was a Russian puppet, COVID lockdowns were necessary and the 2020 Election was the most secure in US history. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) has introduced a bill that would eliminate the positions of Chief Diversity Officer and Senior Advisor for Diversity and Inclusion at the Pentagon or any other similar position, Breitbart News can exclusively reveal.
Roy said in a statement:

The Pentagon’s job is to develop our men and women in the Armed Forces into a united, lethal, and battle-ready force to defeat our enemies and defend our interests. It is not supposed to be a woke social engineering experiment wrapped in a uniform. The American people gave House Republicans the power of the purse in November; we need to deliver on our promises and restore mission focus to our Armed Forces.

The bill is called the “Restoring Military Focus Act,” and would eliminate the position of Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer appointed by the Secretary of Defense, eliminate the Senior Advisor for Diversity and Inclusion appointed by the Secretary of each military department, and prohibit the use of federal funds to establish any similar positions at the Department of Defense.

So far, Roy’s bill has 10 co-sponsors, including GOP Reps. Ralph Norman (SC), Paul Gosar (AZ), Dan Crenshaw (TX), Matt Rosendale (AZ), Andy Ogles (TN), Mary Miller (IL), Josh Brecheen (OK), Cory Mills (FL), Dan Bishop (TX), and Tom McClintock (CA).

House Oversight Committee set to grill officials over tracing $140B in pandemic relief fraud

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, under the chairmanship of Kentucky GOP Rep. James Comer, is set to grill key federal officials over tracing the staggering amount of fraud related to pandemic stimulus funds during its first formal hearing.
Comer has invited several federal officials to testify, including Michael Horowitz, chair of the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, Gene Dodaro, comptroller general at the Government Accountability Office and Roy Dotson, assistant special agent in charge and national pandemic fraud recovery coordinator at the U.S. Secret Service.
According to the committee, Comer has sought “documents, communications, and information related to tracking of fraud and improper payments in the unemployment insurance programs” from several federal and state agencies, including: the secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor, the inspector general of the Department of Labor, the director of the California Employment Development Department, commissioner of the New York State Department of Labor and secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.
The latest estimate shows pandemic unemployment benefit fraud topping $60 billion, according to the Government Accountability Office.
The Justice Department is actively investigating cases of fraud under the Paycheck Protection Program, which was designed to issue forgivable loans to qualified businesses during the pandemic. Some studies have estimated that as much as 10% of the loans issued under the program, about $80 billion, were obtained fraudulently.

Busch explained that her team found many violations of the state’s Election Procedures Manual (EPM), which are class 2 misdemeanors. The statute that addresses the EPM, A.R.S. 16-452(C), states that “A person who violates any rule adopted pursuant to this section is guilty of a class 2 misdemeanor.”

Busch said she found election law violations in five categories. They were:
adjudication of ballots, cast ballots that didn’t match;
over 8,000 people who were unable to vote on Election Day;
a backdoor portal to voter registration records that nonprofits were able to access; and
around 300,000 ballots submitted to drop boxes that lacked a chain of custody
Busch discussed how voter records were changed electronically by someone other than the voter, and she believes it was done by progressive nonprofit groups. She discovered that in August 2020, then-Secretary of State Katie Hobbs implemented a new program that allowed nonprofits to access and change voter registration information online. She examined activity modifying voter registrations, and saw that it would spike massively in the middle of the night and on holidays — she said she believes it wasn’t county staff making the changes, but likely nonprofits.
One voter had 13 changes made to their file within a 60-day period. Busch said it was easy for the nonprofits to go in and modify the voter registrations; all they needed was the voter’s driver’s license number. She observed that the most incomplete voter registrations she found came from nonprofits. All of the nonprofits given access by the Secretary of State was far left and backed radical election initiatives, she said.
