Tigers 6, Twins 4 – Torkelson, Carpenter homer as Tigers beat Twins 6-4 to take 3 of 4 in the series

Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter hit back-to-back homers during Detroit’s five-run fifth inning, and the Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 6-4. Carpenter and Andy Ibáñez each had three hits for the Tigers, who won three of four in the series after beginning June by losing 11 of 12. Brendan White, the third of Detroit’s seven pitchers, tossed two scoreless earnings for his first career win. Carlos Correa had two hits for Minnesota, which had won four of five before faltering in the series against Detroit.

Orioles 6, Cubs 3 – Frazier, Mateo help Baltimore Orioles rally for 6-3 win against Chicago Cubs

Adam Frazier and Jorge Mateo each hit an RBI single during Baltimore’s three-run sixth inning, and the Orioles cooled off the Chicago Cubs with a 6-3 win. Anthony Santander homered for Baltimore, and Ramón Urías drove in two runs. Austin Hays had three of the team’s 14 hits. The Orioles had won six of seven when they arrived in Chicago. But they dropped the first two of the weekend series by a combined score of 13-5. Chicago had won a season-high five straight. Mike Tauchman and Christopher Morel homered for the Cubs, who finished with three hits.

Mariners 5, White Sox 1 – Rodríguez, Miller star as the Mariners beat the White Sox 5-1

Julio Rodríguez hit a two-run double, rookie Bryce Miller pitched seven crisp innings and the Seattle Mariners overcame a dominant performance by Lance Lynn, beating the Chicago White Sox 5-1. Lynn matched a franchise record with 16 strikeouts in seven-plus innings, but Miller was terrific and Seattle got clutch hits from Rodríguez and Jarred Kelenic in the victory. Rodríguez’s third-inning double put the Mariners up 2-0. Kelenic added a three-run triple in the eighth.

MLB – Bus driver arrested for DUI while driving Pirates from Chicago to Milwaukee

A bus driver has been arrested on a charge of driving under the influence while transporting the Pittsburgh Pirates from Chicago to Milwaukee for their weekend series with the Brewers. Illinois State Police says the driver was traveling away from officers seeking to escort the bus on its trip to Milwaukee late Thursday. Troopers said they observed more erratic driving and eventually stopped the bus on the right shoulder of I-94 in Chicago. The driver isn’t a Pirates employee but was contracted to drive the team to Milwaukee after the completion of their series with the Cubs.

Mystics 77, Sky 69 – Delle Donne scores 20 points, Sykes adds 16 as Mystics beat Sky 77-69

Elena Delle Donne scored 20 points, Brittney Sykes added 16 points and three steals and the Washington Mystics beat the Chicago Sky 77-69. Washington has won four of its past five games and six of its past eight. Chicago has lost four games in a row. Morgan Bertsch, who had missed the past eight games because of an ankle injury, shot 6 of 9 from the field, 4 of 5 from 3-point range, and scored 16 points with a career-high-tying seven rebounds for the Sky. Marina Mabrey added 11 points for Chicago. Alanna Smith added 8 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds.

Dream 100, Fever 94 – Gray scores 25, Howard adds 21 as Dream beat Fever 100-94, win 3rd straight

Allisha Gray scored 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting, Rhyne Howard added 21 points and the Atlanta Dream beat the Indiana Fever 100-94 on Sunday. Cheyenne Parker had 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals for Atlanta. Nia Coffey made 3 of 4 from 3-point range, finished with 11 points and tied a career high with six assists. Aliyah Boston, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA draft, made 10 of 15 from the field and led Indiana with 25 points — tying her career best — and a season-high four blocks. The win was the Dream’s third consecutive on a four-game road trip.

Golf – PGA – Wyndham Clark plays big and becomes a major champion at the US Open

Wyndham Clark is the U.S. Open champion and certainly played the part. All he did was hold his nerve against a world-class collection of contenders. Clark held off Rory McIlroy to win by one shot at Los Angeles Country Club. And to think two months ago the 29-year-old from Denver was looking for his first PGA Tour title. Now he has two wins and is a major champion. And he likely will be part of the Ryder Cup team this fall. It was more disappointment for McIlroy. He birdied his first hole and that was his only birdie.

Golf – LPGA – Leona Maguire plays last 6 holes in 6 under to win Meijer LPGA Classic

Leona Maguire played her final six holes in 6 under and shot an 8-under 64 to win the Meijer LPGA Classic by two strokes, her second tour victory. Maguire made six birdies and an eagle in her bogey-free round at Blythefield to finish at 21-under 267. She caught playing partner Ariya Jutanugarn with an eagle on the par-5 14th hole to reach 18 under, then closed with three straight birdies to pull ahead of Jutanugarn and Xiyu Lin. Jutanugarn shot her second straight 66 and finished alone in second. Lin shot 68 and finished tied for third with third-round leader Amy Yang, who had a 69.

NHL – Why Marty Walsh left the Biden administration to run the NHL players’ union

Marty Walsh was less than halfway through his term in the Biden administration as labor secretary when the phone rang with an interesting opportunity. The call was about a job running the NHL Players’ Association. The former mayor of Boston and longtime Bruins fan was intrigued, interviewed and earlier this year got the role as executive director. Now three months into the job, Walsh is trying to get to know players and what they care the most about. His most pressing issue is the Arizona Coyotes and their 5,000-seat arena after a referendum for a new building failed.

NHL – Golden Knights and fans celebrate 1st NHL championship with parade and rally

Vegas Golden Knights fans lined the Las Vegas Strip for a Stanley Cup victory parade and a rally in front of their home arena to mark the team’s first NHL championship. Fan rallied in front of T-Mobile Arena after a motorcade along Las Vegas Boulevard Saturday night. At one point people separated barricades and climbed fences but the crowd otherwise remained orderly. Above the arena stage where the hockey players gathered with the trophy, a banner displayed the names of victims of the October 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed 58 people and injured more than 850. People in the crowd Saturday recalled the role the team played in helping to rebuild the spirit of the community.

NBA – Bradley Beal being traded to Phoenix by Washington, AP source says

Bradley Beal is being traded to Phoenix, where he will form a new power trio alongside Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. The Washington Wizards and the Suns agreed to the deal on Sunday, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. The person says Phoenix has agreed to send Chris Paul, Landry Shamet and a package of future second-round picks to Washington for Beal, a three-time All-Star. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade is pending league approval. Beal’s agent says he waived his no-trade clause to make the deal happen.

CONCACAF – US beats Canada 2-0 to win CONCACAF Nations League

Folarin Balogun and Chris Richards scored their first international goals, both off assists from Gio Reyna, and the United States beat Canada 2-0 for the Americans’ second straight CONCACAF Nations League title. Richards scored in the 12th minute from a corner kick and Balogun doubled the lead in the 34th, He debuted in Thursday’s 3-0 win over Mexico after choosing to play the U.S. over England. The Americans were again led by interim coach B.J. Callaghan, who took over May 30 and also will run the team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup starting next weekend.

NCAAMBB – West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins resigns hours after DUT arrest

West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins has resigned following a drunken driving arrest. The university announced his resignation Saturday night. Huggins was charged with driving under the influence on Friday night after his SUV stopped in the middle of traffic in Pittsburgh with a shredded tire. According to a criminal complaint, a breath test determined Huggins’ blood alcohol content was 0.21%, more than twice the legal limit. Last month the university had suspended Huggins three games for using an anti-gay slur while also denigrating Catholics during a radio interview. Huggins entered the Basketball Hall of Fame last September and was the third winningest coach all-time in Division I.

NCAA – NCAA medical committee seeks to remove marijuana from banned substances list

A NCAA medical committee is recommending the removal of marijuana from its banned drug list and suggesting that testing should be limited to performance-enhancing substances. To pass, the legislation must be introduced and approved by all three NCAA divisions. A final decision is expected this fall. The proposal is one of several recommendations by the NCAA’s committee on competitive safeguards and medical aspects of sports. Other proposals include establishing a trace-level threshold for a banned hormone and metabolic modulator.

Bridgman 7, Algonac 1 – Bridgman beat Algonac 7-1 for State Baseball Championship

A four run 3rd inning broke a scoreless tie and propelled Bridgman to their first state baseball championship since 1987 with a 7-1 win over Algonac at McLane Stadium at Michigan State University in East Lansing.  Alec McMartin lead off the third with a walk, then with the bases loaded. Wade Haskins popped out, but scored MacMartin.  Riley Gloe singled and drove in two more runs, then scored himself on an RBI double from Nolan Roberts.  Bridgman had a 4-0 lead.  Bridgman would add two more run in the 5th inning, after Pagel led off the inning with a single and a single from Glow, new Algonac pitcher Caleb Thomas committed at balk, moving Pagel and Gloe up one base.  Roberts hit an RBI single, and then Ethan Stine did the same giving the Bees a 6-0 lead.  Algonac was able to plate a run in the top of the 6th, but Bridgman got that run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double from Pagel.  Page worked a 1-2-3 7th inning to close out the game and earn Bridgman the championship trophy.  Bridgman last won a baseball state championship in 1987 when the Bees defeated Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart 10-9 in 8 innings for the Class D state title.
