Africa: Al-Shababa attacked a UN convoy in Somalia this week. A number of bystanders were injured and killed. Somalia has also endured two suicide bombings and a number of cross border raids this month. The increa e in militant attacks may have contributed to the removal of Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, who lost a vote of no confidence related to a cabinet reshuffle. He is the second Prime Minister to be voted out in 2014.
Europe: In a move toward greater legitimacy, France has voted to recognize Palestine as a state (339 to 151).The International Criminal Court (ICC) also granted Observer status to Palestine this week.

Middle East: Iraq's leadership has requested for Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to push the U.S. for more airstrikes and weapons to combat ISIL. The U.S. and allies will be sending an additional 1500 soldiers for noncombat roles soon.
