The Republic of Moldova held parliamentary elections on November 30, 2014. While Moldova is a small country of around 4 million people, it plays a critical geopolitical role. The reasons for this are numerous, but the Transnistria issue is the most pressing regarding US National Security. A recent Senate Foreign Relations Committee report stated that there have been numerous interdictions of nuclear material in Moldova, with strong suspicion of their origins being from Transnistria. Transnistria continues to be a major player in arms and human trafficking.Preliminary results show that 5 parties have reached the 6% threshold to enter parliament. These parties are Liberal Democrats (PLDM), Democrats (PD), Liberals (PLM), Socialists (PSRM), and Communists (PCRM). PLDM, PD, and PLM are expected to form a coalition government, and PLDM and PLM have already confirmed their intentions. The predicted mandates are as follows: PLDM 24, PD 19, PLM 12, PSRM 25, PCRM 21.
