Eurasia: Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili has dismissed Defense Minister Irakli Alasania. The announcement follows multiple arrests in the Defense Ministry related to negligence and a food poisoning scandal. The party affiliated with Alasania, Our Georgia: Free Democrats has withdrawn from the ruling coalition.
Africa: Boko Haram has performed a number of high profile attacks during the past week. A suicide bomber attacked a religious service for Shi’ite Muslims last weekend. This week, another suicide attack targeted a school killing 47 school children. Additionally, Boko Haram has staged a number of raids and robberies across the country.
Europe: Catalonia held an informal poll on independence from Spain today. 37% of the population turned out for the vote and 80% of those Catalans voted in favor of independence.
Asia: The two remaining Americans imprisoned in North Korea were returned home today. Kenneth Bae and Matthew Todd Miller were released after James Clapper, U.S. director of national intelligence visited the country with a letter from President Obama.
Middle East: The Supreme Court of Libya ruled the recently elected parliament as invalid this week, calling the election unconstitutional.
North America: Amid highly controversial nuclear talks with Iran, President Obama wrote a “secret” letter to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The letter was sent last month, before the midterm elections and discussed combating the Islamic State.
