The Topic of Love

This week SD and Lady V discuss the topic of love; such as, ‘What is love and the role God plays in it?” The ladies start the discussion with the following definitions of the word ‘love’ from Dictionary.com, 

Love can be a warm personal attachment sexual passion, a term of endearment enthusiasm of a certain thing (love of books, movies, cars, and etc.) used as a score of ‘0’ in the sport of tennis.  

SD and Lady V discuss the importance of being on the same page about ‘love’ in any given relationship because everybody’s definition of love is not necessarily the same. Sadly, some people use the word ‘love’ very lightly. 

Interpreting the Meanings of Love

To one person, ‘love’ is intimate and/or sexual; whereas the other person’s view of love (in that relationship) is of a warm personal attachment or friendship. In the words of Lady V, “…to some, love doesn't mean anything, that's why I think so many relationships fall apart because I think the definition is misconstrued where it has no meaning to some people.”  

She continues with the following statement, “… if we all could get on the same page of what it really means, then maybe the world would look a lot different than what it does.” Lady V’s point is well conveyed in the following scripture, 

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 New International Version  

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 

Love According to the Greeks

The ladies also discuss the article, The Ancient Greeks: Six words for love and why knowing them can change your life by Roman Krznaric. SD shares and explains the six Greek words and the definitions from the article: 

Eros [sexual passion] Philia [deep friendship or brotherhood] Ludus [playful, joking or flirtatious] Pragma [long-lasting and compromising] Philautia [self-love (healthy)or narcissistic (unhealthy and selfish)] Agape [the love of everyone]. Agape was also translated into the Latin word caritas, which is the origin of the present-day word ‘charity.’ 

The 'God' Kind of Love

To Christians, Agape means ‘The God Kind of Love.’ SD and Lady V share that He is a giving God and gives freely of His love. 

God loves His creation so much that He placed the earth in just the right spot in the universe. The earth was strategically placed. It is not too close to the sun where it would burn up or too far away, where every human being and every other living thing would freeze to death. 

The majority of Christians cannot deny God's role in ‘love’ because God is love and His love gives everyone the ability to love. The Holy Bible explains this belief in the following scriptures,

1 John 4:7-8 New International Version

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
