Welcome to the “Burning down the House” edition of the Visual Marketplace Index Report. What a day today – the portfolio is down more than 4%, and every stock seems to be having a fire sale.
World stock markets fell sharply on Friday, heading for their worst week of the year, and commodities swung lower as more data pointed to slower growth in China and sent investors scurrying to the safety of bonds and gold.
Emerging market assets took another hammering and oil prices were on track for their longest losing streak in almost 30 years after Chinese factory activity shrank at its fastest pace since the 2009 financial crisis.
The dollar fell broadly, dropping to a two-month low against the euro, as the Chinese data eroded expectations the Federal Reserve will raise U.S. interest rates next month.
The S&P broke below the 2,000 level and the Dow slipped closer toward correction territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average landed hard – shredding 530.94 points, or 3.12%, to finish trading at 16,459.75. The S&P 500 lost 55.98, or 2.75%, to finish trading at 1979.75. The NASDAQ composite lost 150.51 points, or 3.09%, to finish at 4,726.98. The Visual Marketplace Index had its single worse day, losing almost 3%, and had its largest single day point drop, of 7.48 points, to finish at 246.48.
