Legally Blonde: The Musical. A Review.

August 11, 2014

Oh My Gawd, Oh My Gawd, Oh My Gaaawd!
Yup that will be the song you will all singing when leaving Legally Blonde: The Musical. The only thing really missing from this production was Reese Witherspoon, or was she? No, that was Jocelyn Gauthier representing her clever character Elle Woods. Jocelyn made the role her own in her own ways and sang her way into the hearts of all of us remembering the pink covered girlish sorority president Elle Woods.

This was the 2001 American classic movie, but just as the title suggests, The Musical version. Yes this was the same story as the movie except that all the characters that we loved in the movie are dancing and singing and a lot funnier "It follows the story pretty closely but I really like the adaptation." commented Gauthier. Yes many times as I was dancing in my seat I found myself laughing. At one point when they were caught in a major set change,  the black curtains were drawn while Paulette's UPS delivery man walk across the stage to music that would suggest the beginning of a porno, a very comical bit.

Whenever I go to a live production I am always interested in how many and how the props are being used. This set was simple and very effective, in a jail scene (only one scene), a light display was the only prop. Most of everything was 2 sided so usually when the audience was finished clapping, the next scene was ready to start. I really liked the small things that was not over looked, like how the clock was the right time. I thought it was a nice touch as this is not a long show and seeing the time was relaxing instead thinking what time it was and digging out your phone.

The music is something that stands out, a band underneath the stage play as the actors and dancers sang their hearts away. You might even think its a CD with playback. The music is that tight. In an exclusive interview with radio personality Oswaldo Perez Cabrera on The Morning After Show the main actress Jocelyn Gauthier talked about the music "The band is live, we have a band that is hidden underneath the stage, the music is not easy, its very challenging, a lot of the music is written in seven sharps." When asked if they also sing live she replies "yes we sing live, we have wireless microphones, so everything you see there is live."  Jocelyn is a graduate from UBC  "its all original music, is very smart and very funny lyrics and dialogues. The choreographer is also the director and we have a good team with a good, strong message."

The show started at 8pm and had a break at 9:15pm and wrapped everything up before 10:30pm. Yes a great way to spend a night under the stars with your family.

This is a great family friendly show that everyone in the family can and will enjoy. Make sure you pack a picnic and get there early to enjoy the presentation.
