The Golden Rule

The Golden Rule

The Golden Rule or ethic of reciprocity is a maxim,  ethical code or morality that essentially states either of the following:

  • One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself (directive form).
  • One should not treat others in ways that one would not like to be treated (cautionary form, also known as the Silver Rule).

Sounds pretty simple, eh?

Treat others nicely, don’t be intentionally hurtful, and life will be good.

Unfortunately there are those who take advantage of people who live this way.

They treat others like doormats, walking all over them, and then guilt their victims when they stand up for themselves.

There’s also those who embody the golden rule to the point where they lose themselves in attempting to please others.

These are the doormats that get stepped on.

In life, the golden rule needs to be lived.

Treat others the way you’d like to be treated, yet don’t allow yourself to be a doormat because of it.

People pleasing is borrowing confidence from others.  It’s a quick fix that’s highly addictive.

Confidence comes from inside.

When you live that, treating others kindly becomes who you are….not just something you do.
