TORWars Podcast #156: Character Transfers and the Future of SWTOR

June 25, 2013

Hey there TORWarriors and welcome to TORWars Podcast #156: Character Transfers and the Future of SWTOR.  Today we change up the format a bit to bring you our thoughts on the events that have happened since the Los Angeles Community Cantina event. Server transfers, how EA feels about SWTOR, Star Wars Battlefront, Dragon Age: Inquisition and more, are our topics of discussion today. Read on for the show notes, or just hit the play button.

A paper bag a Wookiee makes not….

Topics Of Discussion

1. SWTOR had no presence on the show floor, and EA didn’t talk about SWTOR at all.

  • â— Is this a bad thing?
  • â— Does this mean development has stopped?
  • â— Why would EA treat SWTOR this way?

2. What clues did we get about Battlefront?

  • ◠“Battlefront is a vehicle experience, it’s a character experience. DICE has proven, in how they develop Battlefield, as far as being able to do air, land, sea combat, all the way up to F-18s fighting,†Gibeau told IGN. “They’ve been able to demonstrate through the Frostbite tech and through their design capabilities and talent that they can create these huge, epic set-piece wars. That’s kind of the dream of Battlefront. Hoth, the battle of Hoth. You’ve got space, you’ve got the surface, you’ve got infantry, you’ve got AT-ATs. That’s the table stakes that they come in with. They know how to do that. They’re really good at it.â€
  • â— Also indicated that they want to innovate in terms of “scaleâ€.
  • â— Absolutely no release date. None.

3. What clues did we get about Dragon Age: Inquisition?

  • â— It’s now being deemed an “action RPGâ€. We don’t think this means anything.
  • â— Story, with consequences, is being touted heavily.
  • â— The mages are in all out war with the Templars.
  • â— There’s a new protagonist.
  • â— BioWare is trying to connect up the previous Dragon Age stories, which have been somewhat disparate.
  • â— BioWare has dropped the “III” from the game’s title.
  • â— It’s using the new Frostbite 3 engine
  • â— It’s been delayed an entire year to Fall 2014.

4. Did we get any intel about EA’s attitude toward SWTOR while we were there?

  • â— Yes, repeated rumors by “people in the know†have indicated that SWTOR is very well received by EA right now.
  • â— Why? Because it’s making really good money.
  • â— What does that mean for development?
  • â— Will we see SWTOR at future E3s?

5. Any new expansions on the horizon?

  • â— Rumor’s are that yes, there will be more RotHC style expansions in the future.
  • â— Space game? Can’t say much, except that we learned some VERY interesting facts. What are they? Well, suffice to say the space game is apparently much bigger, better, and more full featured that we EVER imagined it would be.

6. The Community Cantina’s are a lot more than they appear to be.

  • â— They’re a sign that BioWare is continuing to invest in the community
  • â— They’re actually quite candid in answering some questions.
  • â— They still have to be cagey because of the response of some fans
  • â— Shouting from the back.
  • â— Unnecessarily confrontational
  • â— Repeating the same personal agenda again and again, e.g., paladins in WoW.

7. Character Transfers

  • â— As of the time we recorded this, they were still set to go for…tomorrow morning!
  • â— Might be smooth, might be a bit buggy.
  • â— If you’re expecting perfection, you’re gonna have a bad time.
  • â— APAC transfers were solid, but still had problems.
  • â— Come and Join the TORWars guild, we’d love to have you!
