The Septuagint Sessions #9 – Francis Borchardt on 2 Maccabees 2:13-15

July 17, 2014

This podcast is part 2 of an interview with Francis Borchardt [Listen to part 1 here]. We discuss the usefulness of 2 Maccabees 2:13-15 in discussions on the formation of the canon, and he offers 5 proofs for why this passage cannot be used as evidence for an emerging canon in the second century BCE.
2 Maccabees 2:13-15
13 The same things are reported in the records and in the memoirs of Nehemiah, and also that he founded a library and collected the books about the kings and prophets, and the writings of David, and letters of kings about votive offerings. 14 In the same way Judas also collected all the books that had been lost on account of the war which had come upon us, and they are in our possession. 15 So if you have need of them, send people to get them for you.
The Septuagint Sessions is a labor of love, but it does cost several hundred dollars a year for the space and technology. If you enjoy what you’re hearing and you feel inclined to give up a Starbucks or two in the coming week, I’d be most grateful if you use the form below to support the show.
