TWP : 018 Wedding Photography Timing and Changing Photography Styles with Hilary Cam

March 24, 2013

Timing for your wedding day is crucial if you are to maximise your enjoyment, photographic opportunities and value for money. It seems when planning your wedding day, especially from 12-18 months prior to the day that you have an unlimited number of hours available to you. This just isn't the case.

In reality, run late at the start and you'll be late for the whole day, rushing between one event to the next, trying to "catch up" on what you've missed out on. This is no way to spend your wedding day.

The alternative to rushing is to accept that you're late and you'll have to miss something. What will you choose?

An unfinished makeup job

An almost done hair style
Less photos before your ceremony
A shortened ceremony because your celebrant or priest has other appointments
Less time to mingle with guests once you're married
One less location for your photo shoot
Or come late to the reception at the risk of spoiling the meal for 100 or so guests

To me, none of these are anything I'd like to change or give up for my wedding day. In my conversation in todays episode of The Wedding Podcast, with Hilary Cam, a very talented Sydney photographer who experienced a baptism of fire when thrown into the deep-end of wedding photography in 2004, we talk wedding photography.

In particular, we focus on:

Wedding day timing and why it's so important for a memorable and enjoyable day
Changing photography trends for weddings
Modern brides and their expectations for photography
The different shooting styles, what they are and how they're really captured
After your wedding day - getting the best prints
The difference between a pro lab reprint and one from a Woolworths mini lab

A lovely phone call for me
Also in this episode, a lovely phone call from a photographer friend of mine prompted me to discuss how to get the romantic style of images that you may see in an old style Hollywood film. Achieving a romantic look may seem like a monumental task with a lot of typical Aussie blokes but a slight change in his hand position and everything changes.

Suddenly you look like you feel... madly in love, closer than ever. Just like you've stepped onto the set of a romantic film. It's not at all difficult if you know what to look out for.
