What is the most effective way for us to share an idea or a truth with a stranger? Is it best to be straight forward and engage them directly with whatever notion or nugget of wisdom we wish to offer up or would it be better for us to slow things down and get to know our audience first? Of course, the second option certainly sounds nicer if anything, but it doesn't seem to be the technique we often begin with especially when it's about what we feel, think, and believe. My guest on the show this week is John Joseph Thompson and we talk about that. 

John is the Creative Director at E One Publishing in Nashville & Associate Dean at Trevecca Nazarene University. John feels that we need to 'earn the right' to be able too speak into another persons life and that could take some time. Time that many of us aren't willing to put into a relationship outside of our immediate circle of influence and community; however, without it we are more like clanging gongs than heralding heroes. 

John and I also spoke about his affection for music as a young boy. He recalled spending countless hours turning the dial on the radio searching for something that spoke to his struggle. John used to close his bedroom door and put on his headphones to block out the arguing and fighting between his parents. John said his father struggled with several deviant behaviors and addictions which were often the cause of the disputes. Music helped him find a sense of hope in the midst of the melodic struggle.
