In this episode of The Mentors Radio, Host Tom Loarie talks with Guest Mentor Anthony Walton, award-winning author and poet, professor and senior writer-in-residence at prestigious Bowdoin College, about the importance and power of good mentors, the art of writing and storytelling, and the importance of education in shaping our future and our role as a citizen.

Born the grandson of a Mississippi share-cropper, who grew up in Illinois, Anthony was greatly influenced by a teacher, a nun, who was determined to get him into the University of Notre Dame (UND). Not only did he attend UND, after graduation he continued studies at Brown University, went on to receive the Whiting Writer’s Award for his poems and essays, and became a respected college professor and writer. He is best known as author of a chapbook of poems, Cricket Weather, for his non-fiction work, Mississippi: An American Journey, and as co-editor of The Vintage Book of African American Poetry: 1750-2000. His poems and essays have appeared regularly in The New York Times, Harper’s and The Atlantic, to name a few publications. FASCINATING interview!!
