This Week in Naval History
On August 11, 1846, during the Mexican-American war, Commodore Stockton marched on Pueblo de Los Angeles to meet in battle with the army of General Jose Castro, the acting governor and commander of the Mexican forces in Alta California. When he learned of Stockton’s arrival, Castro pulled back, heading in the direction of Sonora. Immediately after these events Stockton dispatched Kit Carson to inform Washington of his capturing Los Angeles.
